Wellington Unanimously Accepts Liberty Counsel's Recommendation to Display Nativity

Dec 13, 2005

Wellington, FL - Tonight the Wellington City Council voted unanimously to include a nativity scene alongside a Christmas tree and a Menorah.

For some time Wellington has sponsored a display on public property that included a Christmas tree and a Menorah. A few weeks ago City officials tabled a motion to include a nativity scene, stating that the City needed more time to study the issue. Liberty Counsel sent a legal memo to the entire City council which stated that publicly-sponsored holiday displays including both secular and religious symbols are constitutional. Tonight Liberty Counsel attorney Dean DiBartelomeo addressed the council on behalf of our client Robert Galt. At the conclusion of the meeting, the City voted unanimously to include the nativity scene.

Mathew D. Staver, President and General Counsel of Liberty Counsel, stated: "We applaud the City of Wellington for including the nativity scene. Excluding a nativity scene from a holiday display disenfranchises a large segment of society. After all, Christmas is a national and state holiday that celebrates the birth of Christ."
