Washington, DC – Liberty Counsel applauds the U.S. House of Representatives for the unanimous passage of a resolution condemning the theft of the Mojave Desert memorial cross. The cross serves as a memorial to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for our nation in World War I, and it honors all veterans, living or dead. It is the only memorial of its kind to honor the fallen soldiers of World War I. Congressman Jerry Lewis (R-CA), who proposed the resolution, made it clear that preserving the honor and memory of veterans, fallen or otherwise, was critical. The memorial was built in 1934 and has comforted many soldiers and citizens since that time.

Unfortunately a small group found the memorial offensive. The ACLU in their lawsuit protested that the Mojave Cross was “an unconstitutional display of a religious symbol on government land.” During the litigation, the government sought to convey the land to a private entity, but the ACLU continued to protest. The U.S. Supreme Court sent the case back to the lower court, and shortly thereafter it was stolen by vandals. The House resolution, by supporting this memorial and condemning the horrible acts of vandalism, is a step in the right direction. Now the U.S. Attorney General should aggressively defend the case. Thus far, Eric Holder’s office has refused to allow an identical memorial cross to be placed in the same spot as the original cross.

Mathew Staver, Founder of Liberty Counsel and Dean of Liberty University School of Law, commented: "I applaud the U.S. House of Representatives for passing a resolution supporting the memorial cross and condemning the vandals. Now, Attorney General Eric Holder ought to aggressively defend this case. A replacement cross has been donated, and President Obama ought to direct his agency to reinstall it in place of the original memorial cross."
