Same-Sex Marriage Group Distorts Truth About Florida Marriage Protection Amendment

Aug 26, 2008

Orlando, FL - Florida Red and Blue, a political committee and front group for a coalition of homosexual rights groups opposing Amendment 2 (the Florida Marriage Protection Amendment), will air a false television ad in an attempt to mislead and scare senior citizens. The ad will be aired on Florida stations during the Democratic National Convention.

The campaign commercial asserts that the marriage amendment is an attempt by the government to interfere "into our private lives." Other parts of the ad state that defeating Amendment 2 would "keep government out of our private lives” and that "personal marriage issues should be decided by you, your family and clergy, not by the government." The ad even claims the amendment will cause senior citizens to lose benefits.

Amendment 2 allows the people, rather than activist judges, to decide how marriage will be defined in Florida. The amendment is necessary because same-sex marriage advocates filed eight separate lawsuits in 2004 seeking to have the courts sanction same-sex marriage. In response to these lawsuits, a broad-based movement began to gather signatures to place Amendment 2 on the ballot and place the definition of marriage in the Florida Constitution.

The campaign commercial also states that "Democrats are united against Amendment 2 in Florida." Over three quarters of a million Florida voters signed a citizen’s initiative petition to get the marriage amendment on the ballot. Well over 33% of those Floridians who signed the petition are registered Democrats. The recent June 3, 2008, Quinnipiac Florida poll demonstrates that a significant 45% of Democratic voters in Florida support Amendment 2. Florida Red and Blue does not represent the majority of Floridians.

Mathew Staver, Founder of Liberty Counsel and Dean of Liberty University School of Law, successfully argued in favor of Amendment 2 at the Florida Supreme Court against the ACLU. In a 7-0 ruling, the Florida Supreme Court ruled that Amendment 2 is about the "singular subject" of marriage and that the effect of the amendment does nothing new but merely protects something old by placing the definition of marriage in the state constitution.

Staver commented on the misleading television ad: "Traditional marriage resonates with voters because it reflects the values of the majority. Radical homosexual groups opposed to traditional marriage know their only chance of defeating Amendment 2 is to resort to lies and scare tactics. Support for traditional marriage transcends political parties. It is a universally shared value."
