Baltimore, MD - Today, Liberty Counsel filed an amicus brief with Maryland's appeals court on behalf of the Association of Maryland Families in defense of the state's marriage law. In January of 2006, the circuit court for Baltimore City struck down Family Law Article 2-201, which states "only a marriage between a man and a woman is valid in this state."

The Association of Maryland Families ("AMF") is a nonprofit corporation with headquarters in Annapolis, Maryland, and serves as a voice for the family throughout Maryland. AMF has developed a significant body of information regarding the importance of marriage to all aspects of life and society and is committed to protecting the traditional definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

Liberty Counsel has defended more than forty marriage cases throughout the country in the past two and a half years alone. Mathew Staver, the Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel, has written a book on the subject entitled, Same-Sex Marriage: Putting Every Household at Risk. Liberty Counsel's brief points out that numerous other state high courts, including the New York Court of Appeals and the Washington Supreme Court, as well as the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, have recently rejected similar challenges to marriage laws. Like these other courts, the brief urges the Maryland Court of Appeals to similarly defer to the will of the people of Maryland.

Mary E.
