Jackson, MS – On Tuesday, Mississippi voters will vote on a state constitutional amendment which will recognize personhood from the moment of fertilization, cloning or the functional equivalent thereof. If passed, the proposed amendment, Proposition 26, will make Mississippi the first state to recognize human life, regardless of one’s age or location. The amendment could trigger a challenge to Roe v. Wade, which invented a “right” to abortion through all nine months of pregnancy. Liberty Counsel has successfully defended legal challenges to this amendment before the Mississippi Supreme Court and continues to support it.

The amendment to the state constitution’s Bill of Rights, reads: “The term person or persons shall include every human being from the moment of fertilization, cloning or the functional equivalent thereof.” Under the proposed amendment, the personhood of the unborn at all stages of life inside the womb will be recognized and protected under law.

In July, Planned Parenthood and the ACLU Center for Reproductive Rights attempted to silence voters by suing to keep the Personhood Amendment off the ballot, even though it had received more than enough signatures to be placed before the voters. Liberty Counsel attorney Steve Crampton successfully defended the Amendment before the Mississippi Supreme Court. Now the voters will have their say. Liberty Counsel’s efforts have given the state of Mississippi the historic opportunity to confer personhood upon the unborn. Passage of this simple amendment would be a significant step forward for the rights of pre-born babies.
