Washington, DC – Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has scheduled a key vote on the Defense Authorization Bill for tomorrow. Liberty Counsel is renewing its opposition to the bill, because it will repeal the law that prevents homosexuals from serving in the military and will allow abortions on military bases.

This bill should not be manipulated into a vehicle for changing social policy, when its purpose is to fund the military. Liberty Counsel strongly opposes the bill with the added provisions that would destabilize military families and undermine military readiness.

Liberty Counsel is urging its members to contact their Senators at their offices or by calling the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask them to oppose the bill. The issues of abortion and homosexuals in the military do not belong in a military spending bill, just as the “hate crimes” provision did not belong in the Defense Authorization Bill last year.

The Freedom Federation sent a letter to each of the members of Congress, encouraging them to oppose the Defense Authorization Bill. The Freedom Federation is comprised of some of the nation’s largest multiracial, multiethnic, and multigenerational faith-based and policy organizations and stands united in support of fundamental core values expressed in the Declaration of American Values.

The Freedom Federation letter was signed by many leaders of organizations representing a total of more than 30 million people. These leaders remain united in their opposition to the Defense Authorization Bill and continue to urge the Senators to unite in opposition as well.

I urge the Senate to reject this Defense Authorization Bill with these amendments that promote homosexuality and abortion. The American people are fed up with these covert political games.”
