Washington, DC – Today, Liberty Counsel’s Founder and Chairman, Mathew Staver, sent a letter of support to Senators John McCain and Carl Levin regarding the continuation of the so-called "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" military policy and the underlying federal law. This letter joins more than 1,000 retired flag and general officers of the military who are also asking that the policy be upheld. This effort is in coordination with Elaine Donnelly, President of the Center for Military Readiness, who is encouraging military and community leaders to communicate support to their elected officials for the policy banning open homosexuality in the military.

In the letter, Staver states, "It is incredibly important to note, unlike the militaries of other countries, the United States Military is a voluntary force that one does not have a constitutional right to join… It is equally important to note, as is noted in the current law, the primary purpose of the military is 'to prepare for and to prevail in combat.'"

Open homosexuality disqualifies an applicant. The military must have discipline and order and, of necessity, must house people in close and confined quarters, whether on the battlefield, a ship or a submarine. If the law is repealed, many men and women currently serving in the military will leave. Discipline and order will be negatively affected. Senator Levin and other Democratic leaders are proposing to add an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act for 2011 to repeal the law.

The Flag & General Officers for the Military letter, signed by 1,167 distinguished retired flag and general officers, stated unequivocal affirmation for the current law. The letter was delivered on March 31, 2009, to President Barack Obama and other Pentagon and administrative officials. Liberty Counsel’s letter also lends support for the current law.

Staver, who is also the Dean of Liberty University School of Law, commented: "The military is our most important line of defense. Military readiness is of utmost importance. The military should not be used as a pawn to promote a political agenda, nor should it be used for a social experiment to deconstruct the family. Open homosexuality in the military undermines discipline, order and morale. Anything that negatively affects military readiness should be rejected."
