Liberty Counsel Action is informing Senators that its members do not want the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) repealed and that it will be including the vote in its scorecard. S.598 would repeal DOMA. Democrats have scheduled a vote on it tomorrow in the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. This bill would require the federal government to recognize same-sex preferences within states where it is legal and also allow the courts to impose this new definition of marriage in those states. Specifically, the repeal of DOMA would have a national impact as same-sex preferences would be encouraged by our national government, in conflict with 30 current states’ policies.
The 10 Democrats on the 18-person Judiciary Committee support the repeal of DOMA. Liberty Counsel and its 501(c)4 partner organization, Liberty Counsel Action, are urging citizens to contact their Senators immediately and insist that they vote ‘NO’ on S.598. Committee members include: Chairman Patrick J. Leahy (D-VT), Jeff Sessions (R-AL), Jon Kyl (R-AZ), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Christopher A. Coons (D-DE), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Al Franken (D-MN), Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Tom Coburn (R-OK), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), John Cornyn (R-TX), Orrin G. Hatch (R-UT), Michael S. Lee (R-UT), and Herb Kohl (D-WI).
DOMA defines marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman, which is the only way our federal government has viewed marriage. Natural marriage benefits our society by providing the ideal way to raise future generations, stable relationships, and health benefits that same-sex preferences do not. Government has the authority to reward and defend natural marriage because of the good it creates in our society.
