Liberty Counsel Announces the "Naughty & Nice" List for Christmas 2007

Nov 12, 2007

Orlando, FL – As part of the fifth annual Friend or Foe Christmas Campaign, Liberty Counsel has released its “Naughty & Nice” checklist to help consumers know what businesses they should or should not be supporting this Christmas. The list catalogs retailers who either censor or recognize Christmas. The complete list can be found at www.LC.org. This list is compiled of information gathered by individual consumers and is updated whenever new information is received.

So far this year, there are a numbers of stores disregarding “Christmas” and a number that are honoring “Christmas.” The war against Christmas continues, but Liberty Counsel, along with many churches, organizations, and individuals, is fighting back to help save Christmas. As the biggest shopping holiday of the year, Christmas should be recognized by those retailers who are profiting from it. Instead, many stores are calling it “The Holiday” and completely ignoring the fact that “The Holiday” is actually called “Christmas.” Here are a few examples of those retailers on the “Naughty & Nice” list:

Partial “Naughty List”

Home Depot – Web site: “Holiday Gift Center,” “Holiday Decorations,” “Artificial Trees” replace Christmas Trees. There is no mention of Christmas. K-Mart – Web site has a “Holiday Shop,” “Holiday Toys,” the slogan, “Get it in time for the Holiday,” no mention of Christmas. Nordstrom – The web site’s slogan is “Once Upon a Holiday… gifts were given.” Christmas is completely excluded. Kohls – Web site includes, “Holiday shopping list,” “Holiday: find the perfect gifts,” and “Hanukkah,” but no Christmas. The web site also has a countdown of “__ days left – shipping deadlines.” This countdown is obviously for customers to receive their gifts by Christmas, but Christmas is never mentioned. They do not sell “Christmas Trees,” just “Trees.”

Partial “Nice List”

JC Penney – Web site contains a “Christmas Delivery” countdown and “Christmas Extras,” including an open forum where many have shared that their best Christmas gift has been salvation through Jesus Christ. Linens ‘N Things – Has a “Christmas Shop” and “Christmas Checklist.” “Create a Christmas to Remember.” Macy’s – “Merry Christmas – The Magic Starts Here!” Target – Web site: “Christmas Shopping Information,” “Christmas Décor,” selling Jesus Action Figures online. Wal-Mart – Web site: “Home (Theater) for Christmas,” “Christmas Central,” selling Jesus Action Figures in 420 stores.

Mathew D. Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel and Dean of Liberty University School of Law, commented about the “Naughty & Nice” list: “Every consumer should make a list and check it twice, stop patronizing retailers which are naughty and shop at those which are nice. Retailers which seek to profit from Christmas while pretending it does not exist should realize they have offended the vast majority of Americans who enjoy Christmas. Customers have a choice, and they will not patronize corporate Scrooges.”
