Washington, DC – The American Humanist Association (AHA) has plastered insulting advertisements on the sides, tailgates, and interiors of metro buses in the nation’s Capital, questioning the existence of God.
The “Godless Holiday Campaign” ad states: “Why believe in a god? Just be good for goodness’ sake.” On the ad is a picture of a lady dressed in a Santa Claus suit. The advertising campaign begins next week and will run through December. AHA is the same organization which placed billboards in major cities this year reading, “Don’t believe in God? You are not alone.”
The war against Christmas has obviously begun. Liberty Counsel has launched its annual “Friend or Foe Christmas Campaign” in an effort to defend America from the same secularization faced by people living under atheistic governments.
The secularization of Christmas is nothing new. The former Soviet Union secularized Christmas in an attempt to ban God from society. St. Nicholas was replaced with “Did Moroz,” or Grandfather Frost, a Stalinist creation wearing the red cap and long white beard of Santa Claus, but who delivered gifts to children on New Year’s Eve. Christmas trees were banned and replaced with decorated New Year’s trees.
Christianity Today in 2002 reported that in the Vietnamese province of Dak Lak, children’s choirs were forbidden to sing “Silent Night.” From 1969 to 1997, Christmas was banned in Cuba. Such examples are endless in repressive regimes.
On its website, www.LC.org, Liberty Counsel offers a Help Save Christmas™ action pack, which includes educational legal memoranda to educate government officials, teachers, parents, students, private businesses, employees, and others that it is legal to celebrate Christmas.
Mathew D. Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel and Dean of Liberty University School of Law, remarked: “It is the ultimate ‘grinch’ to suggest there is no God during a holiday where millions of people around the world celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. It is insensitive and mean. It is wrong to belittle Jews for celebrating Hanukkah during the holiday season, and it is wrong to offend all religions during Christmas. Christmas is a time of joy and hope, not a time for hate. Why believe in God? – Because Santa is not the only one coming to town.”
