They came to pray. They were met with violence.

Imagine gathering with fellow Christians in a public park to pray, worship, and stand peacefully for your beliefs — only to find yourself assaulted by hostile counterprotesters and caught in a violent confrontation.

Worshippers were pelted with urine-filled balloons. A knife was pulled on a 17-year-old boy kneeling in prayer. Elderly women and children were assaulted. That is what happened at Seattle’s Cal Anderson Park on May 24, 2025. Yet, Seattle’s mayor outrageously blamed the Christian victims for the assault.

Liberty Counsel is fighting back.

In May 2025, Christian organizations and churches planned a series of nationwide public worship services, including one in Seattle on May 24. Called “Mayday,” the events were intended to praise the Lord and sound an alarm for Christians to pray for our country.

Seattle city officials refused to grant a permit for the park the Christians had chosen. Instead, officials ordered them to hold their event at a park in a well-known LGBTQ neighborhood. The churches had no choice — either hold their event in the heart of the LGBTQ area or don’t receive a permit. City officials knowingly set up the Christians for disaster.

The worshippers arrived at their permitted event on May 24, but what was intended for prayer and praise quickly turned into chaos and violence.

LGBTQ and antifa rioters descended on the park, dressed in black and wearing face masks to hide their identities. They soon began assaulting the Christians. The entire melee was caught on video, providing evidence of exactly who committed the violence.

Twenty-three LGBTQ and antifa protesters were arrested, but Seattle’s Democrat mayor, Bruce Harrell, blamed the Christians!

Mayor Harrell maligned the Christians, calling them “far-right extremists.” But not mentioning a word about the crazed leftists who caused the violence — or the fact that the city forced the Christians to hold their event in a neighborhood where they would almost certainly be attacked.

Seattle created a situation that set up the Mayday Christians to be victims of violence, then blamed the Christians. Such actions, especially ones that involve violence, have a chilling effect designed to inspire fear and silence believers.

Thankfully, Liberty Counsel has fought and won scores of cases of this nature, and we will not stop until every attempt to rob Christians of their freedom is eradicated.
