In Washington state, a controversial law allows minors seeking abortion or “gender-affirming” services to obtain them without parental notification. The law also provides "protection” for minors who run away from home in order to seek such services. Parents who object on religious, moral, or other grounds can find themselves powerless to protect their own children and labeled as “abusers.” 

The U.S. Supreme Court has scheduled oral arguments for this case in November. Liberty Counsel is fighting this assault on parental rights with a powerful amicus brief.

Washington’s law raises a fundamental question:

Who has the authority to make life-altering decisions for a child — the child’s parents or the government?

Under the law, certain shelters and state employees may withhold a minor’s whereabouts from parents when there are “compelling reasons,” including when a minor is seeking or receiving “protected” abortion or gender transition services. 

Parents who object are not only shut out of decisions involving their own minor child’s health care, but objecting or refusing to provide those services is categorized as “abuse.”  

For Christian parents who believe they have a God-given responsibility to protect their children, this is deeply troubling.

Parents should not be treated as abusers simply because they refuse to consent to procedures or treatments that could harm their children. 

And children should not be placed in situations where government officials can facilitate life-changing medical decisions while deliberately keeping parents in the dark.

That is why Liberty Counsel is preparing its brief in International Partners for Ethical Care v. Ferguson, as this case moves toward the Supreme Court.
