Congressional hearings expose yet more of the SPLC’s unethical activity

A federal Grand Jury has issued an 11-count indictment against the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). The U.S. Department of Justice said the SPLC “secretly funneled more than $3 million in donated funds to individuals who were associated with various violent extremist groups including the Ku Klux Klan, Aryan Nations, and National Socialist Party of America.” 

Based on these shocking revelations, the U.S. House of Representatives held public hearings last week on the SPLC’s unethical behavior.

Now Liberty Counsel is demanding that the Court of Appeals SANCTION the SPLC for its fraudulent and unethical attempt to deceive the court in its frivolous lawsuit against us.

Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives held hearings investigating the SPLC. Members of Congress got an earful of details on the outrageous and unethical activities the SPLC has used to gin up its 735-million-dollar endowment. This dangerous group has been using those funds to “destroy” Christian organizations like Liberty Counsel.

“The SPLC's public labeling system became far more than a public list,” said Family Research Council (FRC) President Tony Perkins in congressional testimony. “Whether by design or evolution, it functioned as a strategic weapon against conservatives who stood in the way of the Left's agenda.”

Tony would know. In 2012, Floyd Corkins attempted to kill everyone in the FRC headquarters due to the SPLC listing the Christian organization as a “hate group” in 2011, the same year the SPLC added Liberty Counsel to its fraudulent list.

“The SPLC seems to focus its arrows on groups and individuals who are outspoken advocates of traditional family values as well as the rule of law,” testified Dr. Carol M. Swain.

Dr. Swain’s lengthy academic career was cut short by the SPLC after she publicly criticized the Hate Map purveyors for attacking Christian conservative groups instead of actual violent racist groups.

The SPLC decided to punish her by ruining her career.

SPLC spokesman Mark Potok declared Dr. Swain to be an “apologist for white supremacists,” despite the fact that Dr. Swain is a black American who rose out of deep poverty to earn five university degrees and become one of the foremost experts on race in America.

University jobs and speaking engagements dried up, and Dr. Swain was treated like “kryptonite” in academic circles.

The DOJ indictment and the congressional hearings paint a gut-wrenching picture of just how successful the SPLC has been in “destroying” its enemies using a variety of unethical tactics. 

The SPLC’s latest tactic — deliberately filing false information with the Court of Appeals in SPLC’s frivolous lawsuit against us — is just another example of their moral turpitude and lack of even basic ethics. 

Liberty Counsel has requested the court sanction the SPLC. We await the court’s response, but in the meantime, we must continue to fight this case which the SPLC has dragged on for over a decade.

“If America is to remain a nation where freedom of speech, religious liberty, and political dissent truly survive, then the broader conspiracy facilitated and directed by the SPLC must be confronted and exposed,” Perkins testified.
