Silencing The Gospel

Cities silence street preachers

Liberty Counsel is on the case.

Our Christian faith has always been spread by proclaiming the Good News of Christ in public places. Jesus Himself and each of the disciples did not hold neat little services in the quiet halls of a temple or church. Instead, they stood outside, in fields, and in city thoroughfares, preaching and teaching the Way of our Lord.

But on my desk right now are two cases where preachers in two separate southeastern states have been harassed, fined, and even handcuffed for peacefully preaching the Word of God on public street corners.

Freedom of speech, particularly religious speech, is under attack in America. We need YOUR HELP to fight!

Don’t let the gospel be silenced! Stand with street missionaries by supporting our legal fund and a Challenge Grant will DOUBLE your gift!

Jesus preached on hillsides, before the pagan shrines of Caesarea Philippi, the Court of the Gentiles, the Women's Court, and Solomon’s Porch, just to name a few. Peter preached at the temple gates. Paul was known for preaching in marketplaces from Jerusalem to Antioch, to Athens and beyond.

These public testimonies are what spread the faith, not only throughout Israel but also around the world.

In one of the cases on my desk, city police harassed a humble preacher for weeks, simply because he will not stop preaching the gospel on street corners.

In another case, in a different state, a sidewalk preacher who shares his story of deliverance from addiction on street corners near his town’s bar districts was handcuffed and fined for preaching in public without a permit.

Since when does one need a permit to preach the Word of God in public? Jesus didn’t need one. Neither did Peter, Paul, or any of the other disciples. And neither did any one of our country’s founders who took to public squares across the colonies to use their God-given, constitutionally enumerated RIGHT to freedom of speech and religion.

In both cases, the preachers were not screaming, as some sidewalk preachers are known to do. Neither were they holding horrific pictures or doing anything else that might offend the senses of passersby.

Instead, these street preachers were behaving much like our Savior’s early followers — the original street preachers, among them Peter, Paul, and Stephen. These modern preachers tell their stories of redemption, publicly pray with people, and proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Religious liberty and free speech only last as long as those who are willing to defend it. Liberty Counsel will NEVER allow tyrants to silence the gospel.

But these preachers need YOUR HELP so we can continue defending our precious religious freedom rights. Please make a generous single contribution to our legal fund today, or even elect to make a small recurring monthly gift to support our work. Your contribution will be DOUBLED. Christian preachers are counting on you!
