SPLC willfully deceives the court to harm Liberty Counsel

For more than a decade, Liberty Counsel has been forced to battle a frivolous lawsuit launched by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and its client, Janet Jenkins. Jenkins irrationally demanded an impossible 200 billion dollars and falsely claimed Liberty Counsel helped Lisa Miller and her biological daughter leave the country. After 11,000 hours of legal work, 25 depositions, 186,000 pages, and thousands of exhibits, a federal judge ruled that the SPLC’s allegations were completely without merit. 

But the SPLC refuses to stop. Despite seeing the full record and knowing they cannot win, the SPLC has filed an appeal — and submitted what can only be described as a deceptive brief that misrepresents the facts and ignores the evidence and the court’s findings.

Liberty Counsel just filed our 75-page opposition brief in which we request sanctions because the SPLC has crossed the ethical boundaries.

For years, the SPLC has used its enormous endowment to label peaceful organizations as “hate groups,” inflating numbers to raise money and attack those who disagree with its ideology. Even former SPLC staff have exposed the organization’s internal scandals, fundraising tactics, and toxic culture. The SPLC’s pattern is unmistakable: smear, overwhelm, and silence their opponents.

Now the SPLC is using its vast resources to bury us in legal costs and drain our time — time we should devote to defending religious freedom, the sanctity of human life, and the family.

But thanks to the court’s ruling in April 2025, the truth is on our side.

We simply need the resources to keep fighting.
