For 53 years, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has worked toward one single goal — destroying conservative and Christian organizations.

“I want to say plainly that our aim is to destroy these groups, to completely destroy them,” SPLC Senior Fellow Mark Potok bragged in 2007.

Over the years, the SPLC’s “Hate Map” has been used by mass shooters to target Christians and conservatives for assassination. It was also used by the Obama and Biden administrations to strip Christian and conservative organizations of their bank accounts. And since 2011, the SPLC used its nearly billion-dollar endowment to attack and attempt to bankrupt Liberty Counsel.

The SPLC’s mission is “trying to wreck the groups, and we are very clear in our head, this is — we are trying to destroy them ... as a political matter, to destroy them,” Polok said on another occasion. 

When Floyd Corkins tried to mass murder the employees of Family Research Council (FRC) in 2012, he told police he chose FRC because they are on the SPLC’s hate list, which they had recklessly added FRC and Liberty Counsel to in 2011. Police found in Corkins’s pockets a “hit list” of people he intended to murder — all of whom were on the SPLC’s hate list.

When James Hodgkinson shot up the Republicans at the Congressional baseball practice in 2017, police found that he was a follower of the SPLC on social media.

The Obama and the Biden administrations used the SPLC’s “Hate Group” list to pressure banks to stop doing business with Christian and conservative organizations, as well as to surreptitiously authorize the FBI to spy on religious Americans involved with such organizations. 

But the SPLC doesn’t simply rely on crackpots, dangerous men, and the government to destroy its targets. It also uses “lawfare.”

Lawfare is the practice of burying your opponent in so much legal work that they cannot afford to defend themselves. 

The SPLC tried this trick successfully in 2012 when it targeted a change counseling group called JONAH, which had shown remarkable success in treating people’s unwanted gender confusion. JONAH did nothing wrong. But the SPLC used its nearly billion-dollar endowment to hire an army of high-priced attorneys to tie the group up in court until they were bankrupted. JONAH was forced to fold.

Then the SPLC tried the exact same tactics on Liberty Counsel.

The SPLC hates Liberty Counsel not simply because we are Christians and conservatives. They hate us because for 36 years we have been VERY successful at defending life, religious liberty, and the natural family.

We have won 37 cases we’ve argued or briefed before the U.S. Supreme Court and experienced innumerable wins in the Courts of Appeal and state courts.

For 36 years, we have been among the premier defenders of the faith. So, they tried to destroy us.

But this time, they lost. And we are working to turn the tables and make them pay!

We spent over a decade and more than 11,000 hours defending against the SPLC’s frivolous lawsuit which falsely accused Liberty Counsel of participating in a conspiracy to help our former client, Lisa Miller, flee the country with her biological child. They KNEW their client was wrong. ALL the evidence PROVED we were innocent.

Yet the SPLC pursued the case anyway, hoping they would bury us under the same expensive legal mountain with which they buried JONAH.

The type of large firms the SPLC employs charge up to 1,500 dollars an hour. Had Liberty Counsel been forced to hire that level of representation, we would have spent TENS OF MILLIONS of dollars defending ourselves.

STOP the SPLC’s Reign of Terror!

By comparison, we have a small group of attorneys and dedicated staff. But GOD is the foundational support of our ministry. We were blessed to have staff members willing to work long hours to win this lawsuit without having to hire outside expensive law firms. But that defense took valuable resources away from our daily work of defending others.

Liberty Counsel will pursue damages against the SPLC and their client, who forced us to rack up 11,000 hours of work because their client demanded a laughable and outrageous 200 BILLION dollars from Liberty Counsel for something both Janet Jenkins and the SPLC KNEW we didn’t do.

Our goal is to stop the SPLC’s hate filled agenda of “destroying” Christian people and conservative organizations.
