Worship Criminalized for 6 Months Now...

Jan 13, 2021

Believe it or not, ALL worship has been banned in California for 184 days now – that is more than six months! It is criminal to worship in a church or a home with anyone who does not live there. But we may hear from the Court of Appeals on this later this week. Read on. -Mat

As we know, church is far more than a building. It is the assembly of people meeting together to worship the Lord. And there is power where “two or more are gathered” in His name.

Yet in California, it is ILLEGAL for 99.9% of the state to gather and worship in their church, or even in their own homes. That’s right, it is a criminal offense for two or more people to worship in any church... or in a home if just one person does not live in the home. The penalty is up to one year in jail and a daily fine of $1,000! This means no prayer meetings, Bible studies, fellowship meetings or worship of any kind in almost all of California.

Yet, while churches may not gather with even one other person for indoor religious worship services, they may gather in their same buildings with an unlimited number of people to provide social services or “necessities of life” to feed, shelter or counsel people.

Per CA Gov. Newsom’s Stay at Home Orders, church members can meet in unlimited numbers to “support food, shelter, and social services, and other necessities of life for economically disadvantaged or otherwise needy individuals.” But the moment someone opens a Bible, gives a sermon or leads a prayer, that person can be slapped with massive fines and jail time!

At the same time, legions of businesses are allowed to operate under Newsom’s rules. In fact, the list of exemptions to Newsom’s shutdowns is 29 pages long, single spaced! There are 13 broad categories with hundreds of subcategories.

But CHURCH is not exempted.

This internal discrimination has been present since Gov. Newsom first issued his original Stay at Home Order of March 19, 2020. The discrimination became worse on July 13 when all indoor worship was banned. The same internal discrimination continues in the August 28 Blueprint and the December 3 Regional Stay at Home Order, which effectively bans any and all worship for 99.9% of Californians.

As you know, we represent Pastor Ché Ahn, Harvest Rock Church and Harvest International Ministry in their fight to keep church legal in California… and all of America.

The consequences of shutting churches and schools are taking a tragic toll on all people, even our youth.

I recently heard the story of an 11-year-old, so lost in depression and anxiety caused by the shutdowns and remote schooling that the child committed suicide while logged in to their remote classroom. My heart breaks that anyone, let alone an 11-year-old child, would feel so desperately isolated and end their life.

As tragic as this story is, there is hope, and a clear path out of this darkness. A survey conducted by Gallup shows that there is one – and only one -segment of society whose mental health has NOT declined during the COVID shutdowns. In fact, compared to the same time in 2019, this group’s mental health improved.

So, what is this group’s secret? They regularly attend church.

About 46% of regular churchgoers reported their mental health as “excellent” throughout COVID. That statistic is higher than the same group of people reported in 2019. But what is really telling are the non-churchgoers. Only 29% of non-churchgoers characterized their mental health as “excellent.” This is a preventable national tragedy.

Church is not just a building, and it certainly is not just a simple speech that can be digitized and emailed. No, church is the assembly of God’s people, meeting together for worship, prayer, support, healing, and of course, an encounter with God.

We have prayed for God to heal our land. I believe we can help that process of healing by fully opening our churches and Christian schools.

America was birthed in the pulpits and pews of her churches. Those same pulpits and pews can save America now!
