Don't Let Their Sacrifice Be in Vain

May 25, 2020

Generations of Americans have greatly sacrificed, many with their lives, to preserve our freedom. Today, let us honor the sacrifice of these brave men and women by continuing the fight for freedom so it can be passed on to future generations.

Some 244 years ago, We the People bound together in order to form a more perfect union and in 1791 our Founding Fathers codified our God-given, unalienable rights in the Constitution of the United States.

The first ten amendments to the Constitution, known as The Bill of Rights, sought to protect the liberties of every American and none of those liberties is more important than our First Amendment right to religious freedom.

Even the order in which our rights are documented gives light to the great importance our Founders placed on religious freedom -- the very first liberty secured by the Bill of Rights:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free excercise thereof..."

Years later, the United States Supreme Court made this powerful statement in the 1947 case Everson v. Board of Education:

"The 'establishment of religion' clause of the First Amendment means at least this: Neither a state nor the Federal Government can set up a church. Neither can pass laws which aid one religion, aid all religions, or prefer one religion over another. Neither can force nor influence a person to go to or remain away from church against his will" (emphasis added).

Yet, 229 years after our Bill of Rights was ratified and a mere 73 years after the Everson decision named above, American pastors are being arrested on criminal charges of "disorderly conduct" for the mere act of opening their churches.

The Pastors of Elim Romanian Pentecostal Church of Chicago and Logos Baptist Ministries, along with many of their members, grew up in Communist Romania. Christians there were imprisoned, beaten and even killed for holding church and preaching the gospel.

Many had heard of America and her full churches and dreamed of a day when they, too, could worship the Lord openly and freely, unhindered by anti-Christian Communists who had tried to silence God's Word. Eventually, these brave souls emigrated to America and with great joy founded new churches to preach not only to fellow Romanian immigrants, but to anyone searching for the love of Christ.

But their realized dreams of religious freedom are being revoked by a governor and mayor bent on forcing their will on God's people. The pastors of Elim and Logos have each now received not one, but two criminal citations for opening their Chicago-area churches – not all that different than how the anti-Christian persecution began in Communist Romania.

These brave pastors, having faced brutal persecution for their unwavering faith under Communism, recognize all too well the actions of Gov. Pritzker. He has all but declared himself king above the restraints of the Constitution and the law of God. Governor Pritzker has declared that HE, and he only, will decide when, where and how Illinois Christians can worship.

Gov. Pritzker's actions are unconstitutional, illegal and fly in the face of settled law. Government is not God. Nor may government impose its own rules or form of worship upon our churches – no matter what.

The earliest settlers to America came here for the express purpose of practicing their religion in peace, unencumbered by the dictates of anti-Christian tyrants. Generations of American men and women have given their lives in defense of this "first freedom," religious liberty. And the light of our liberty has shone like a beacon throughout the world.

Today of all days, let us live for what generations of honorable American men and women died for – freedom.
