Banned in Boston . . .

May 8, 2019

I am in Boston today to present oral arguments before a federal court of appeals. I'm arguing a case against the city of Boston which censored the Christian flag.

The city rejected Boston resident Hal Shurtleff's request that his Christian civic organization, Camp Constitution, be allowed to fly the Christian flag in the city's public form.

+  +  LGBT flag yes . . . Christian flag no

The city regularly gives other civic and cultural organizations the freedom to raise their flags on a city flagpole to commemorate events important to those organizations.

Camp Constitution wanted to commemorate Constitution Day (September 17). It was eager to celebrate the civic and cultural contributions of the Christian community to the city of Boston and to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It wanted to highlight how Christianity has promoted religious tolerance, the Rule of Law and the U.S. Constitution.

But city officials rejected their permit because the flag was "religious."

Yet, other flags of various ideological stripes have been allowed to fly. The city has allowed the LGBT flag, the transgender flag, and other flags to be flown--some for a couple of days.

It is only the Christian viewpoint that has been censored.

+  +  Blatant discrimination

The city's discrimination against Camp Constitution's Christian viewpoint is an unconstitutional censorship and insult to the First Amendment. The city cannot close its public forums to religious viewpoints.

It's tragic that a Boston official censored the Christian flag at an event to celebrate the Constitution. But Liberty Counsel, with your help, is defending freedom in Boston, the birthplace of the American revolution and the "cradle of liberty."

This is just one of many vital cases filling our docket. The fact is, our religious liberties are under perpetual and intense assault. Never before has Liberty Counsel experienced more opportunities to defend the rights of Christians and uphold our values in the courts!
