Liberty Counsel has filed a brief, asking the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals to rule in favor of Erica Corder, a high school valedictorian who was forced to publicly apologize for sharing her Christian faith during her 30-second graduation message at a Colorado high school. Under duress, Erica wrote an apology because she feared the school would withhold her diploma, put notes in her file and generate negative publicity to prevent her from becoming a school teacher. The principal sent her coerced statement in an email to the entire high school community.
The school district had no right to coerce Erica to speak against her will when she was no longer a student. The school district compounded its unconstitutional censorship of religious viewpoints by forcing an exemplary alumnus to 'confess' to the school's own crime. Graduation was over. The lights had been turned off. The people were gone. Erica had already graduated and yet the school officials falsely claimed this straight-A student could not graduate because she mentioned the name of 'Jesus' in her 30-second speech. This is unbelievable. Students do not shed their right to free speech when they enter the graduation podium.
Erica should be commended for standing up for Jesus Christ. You can send a card or letter of support for Erica Corder to our office: Liberty Counsel, PO Box 540774, Orlando, FL 32854.
Happy Days (and Happy Meals) Are Here Again!
We are pleased to report another victory for family values. In May, Liberty Counsel joined a boycott with the American Family Association and other pro-family groups in a grassroots effort to force McDonald's to stop supporting the homosexual agenda. McDonald's was actively supporting the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), a radical homosexual activist organization.
After experiencing several months of the massive grassroots boycott, McDonald's vice president Richard Elliss resigned from the NGLCC board, and McDonald's sent an email to its franchise owners stating, "it is our policy to not be involved in political and social issues. McDonald's remains neutral on same sex marriage or any 'homosexual agenda' as defined by the American Family Association." McDonald's indicated that it will no longer support the NGLCC.
Liberty Counsel applauds McDonald's for listening to its customers. Contact your local McDonald's manager to thank the company for its decision to stop supporting the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.
