Liberty Counsel and Liberty Counsel Action joined a coalition of more than 150 pro-life groups from all 50 states and sent a letter to Congress this week urging members to defund the abortion industry, including Planned Parenthood, in the upcoming federal budget reconciliation bill. The letter highlights how Planned Parenthood received $699.3 million in American taxpayer dollars in 2023 alone, which amounts to “almost $2 million per day.”
The coalition recommended Congress rescind and redirect this financial support, which is delivered through Medicaid, due to Planned Parenthood’s “all-trimester” abortion services, political lobbying, and litany of unsafe conditions in their facilities. The pro-life groups claim that Planned Parenthood “spent a massive $69.5 million” of taxpayer dollars on “woke” political lobbying from school board races to the presidency, all while promoting abortion in the 2024 election cycle. Despite promoting “women’s health,” Planned Parenthood has boasted performing nearly 393,000 abortions, and having a 40 percent market share of the U.S. abortion industry. While doing this, Planned Parenthood has also consistently neglected the safety of women in its care and routinely opposes basic health and safety standards for their facilities, read the letter.
“Congressional action is necessary to stop the biggest source of taxpayer cash for the domestic abortion industry,” wrote the coalition. “A Republican trifecta presents the opportunity to bolster these efforts by cutting funding for Big Abortion, including Planned Parenthood, through budget reconciliation.”
The pro-life groups then cited a recent tragedy and scandal involving a Planned Parenthood abortion facility that illustrates just how the abortion giant conducts itself.
The letter reads, “The New York Times recently reported a litany of unsafe conditions and botched abortions at Planned Parenthood. For example, in one clinic last year ‘sewage from a backed-up toilet seeped into the abortion recovery room for two days,’ which required employees to shove ‘exam table pads under the bathroom door to block the leak.’ According to the reporting, ‘[p]atients vomited from the stench.’”
According to a lawsuit, another notable and recent health and safety scandal from the abortion industry involves a woman needing emergency surgery after an Illinois abortionist left parts of her aborted baby’s body inside her.
“The American people gave a mandate – it is time for change in Washington,” the pro-life groups stated. “Women and children deserve better care. In an era of reexamining federal funding, Congress should start by cutting funding for Big Abortion in the upcoming reconciliation bill.”
Congress is expected to finalize the fiscal year 2025 budget reconciliation bill sometime before Easter, which is April 20, 2025.
Liberty Counsel Founder and Chairman Mat Staver said, “It does not make sense to subsidize an organization that kills unborn children and harms women. The pro-life groups rightly state that the American people have given Washington ‘a mandate’ for change. Taxpayer dollars should be redirected toward health care services that prioritize the safety and well-being of women and unborn children. Taxpayer dollars should never be used to fund an industry built on death and harm.”
