Pushing back against the Slaughter House Rule, Liberty Counsel distributed a letter to every member of the House of Representatives, stating that the proposed rule is unconstitutional.

Article I, Section 7 of the U.S. Constitution states, "Every Bill which shall have passed the House of Representatives and the Senate, shall, before it become a law, be presented to the President of the United States; … in all such Cases the Votes of both Houses shall be determined by Yeas and Nays, and the Names of the Persons voting for and against the Bill shall be entered on the Journal of each House respectively.” The Founding Fathers included Article I, Section 7 in the Constitution to keep Congress accountable to the people. It is obvious that Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Representative Louise Slaughter are attempting to deceive the American people by refusing to cast votes on the actual language in the Senate healthcare bill.

President Obama stated that the passage of this government takeover of healthcare should receive the "same kind of up-or-down vote that was cast on welfare reform, that was cast on the Children’s Health Insurance Program, that was used for COBRA health coverage for the unemployed and, by the way, for both Bush tax cuts – all of which had to pass Congress with nothing more than a simple majority."

A rule like the Slaughter House Rule, otherwise referred to as the "deem and pass" procedure, was not used to pass any of the controversial pieces of legislation Obama mentioned, and, according to reason and logic, should not even be considered in this healthcare debate. However, reason and logic are lost on folks like Nancy Pelosi, who just Monday endorsed Louise Slaughter’s rule. In fact, Speaker Pelosi said, "I like it... because people don't have to vote on the Senate bill."

Pelosi also said, "We have to pass the Bill so that you can find out what is in it." Apparently, she is ignorant of the intelligence of the American people. Liberty Counsel’s message to Speaker Pelosi is, "America has been listening; Americans know what is in the Bill and they simply do not want a government takeover of their healthcare!" In the past few weeks, Liberty Counsel supporters have sent over 250,000 faxes to members of Congress, expressing their outrage over the healthcare bill.

Mathew Staver, Founder of Liberty Counsel and Dean of Liberty University School of Law, said, "The President and his allies in Congress are masters of confusion and deception. They have a political agenda which distorts the facts regarding healthcare. The Senate healthcare bill funds abortion, rations care, limits freedom, and will bankrupt America. Last night President Obama said he is not concerned with the process. In other words, the end justifies any means. It is unbelievable that the President would disregard the Constitution and the rule of law to push a narrow political agenda that most Americans have rejected."
