Poll Finds 52% of Americans Believe Abortion Should Be Illegal in All or Most Cases

Jun 10, 2021

Fifty-two percent of Americans support a “more restrictive approach on abortion, saying it should be either illegal in all circumstances or legal in only a few,” according to a new Gallup poll.

While 52% is a 3% decline from last year’s poll, it still reveals the majority of Americans lean pro-life.

Unsurprisingly, the majority of Democrats and Republicans hold polar opposite views on this issue; 70% of Democrats identify as "pro-choice" and 74% of Republicans identify as pro-life.

When asked whether abortion is morally acceptable, 64% of Democrats, 51% of Independents and 26% of Republicans said yes.

Historically, Americans have typically leaned more on the side of abortion being morally unacceptable, but now only 46% believe that to be true. The latest polling finds 47% view abortion as morally acceptable. The country is almost evenly split on this vital issue.

Still, only 32% of Americans believe abortion should be legal “under any circumstances.”
