Pro-Life Evangelicals for Biden Feel ‘Used and Betrayed’

Mar 18, 2021

The Pro-Life Evangelicals for Biden group is disappointed in the man they helped elect to the highest office in the land. They believed Joe Biden would become more pro-life in his policies, but so far, he has not. And it didn’t take long for the disappointment to set in, as indicated in the group’s "Open Letter on The American Recovery Act” released March 7, 2021.

“We are very disappointed about the COVID-19 relief package’s exclusion of the Hyde Amendment, a longstanding bipartisan policy that prevents taxpayer funding for abortion,” the letter states. “We’re even more upset that the Biden administration is supporting this bill. ...

"We feel used and betrayed and have no intention of simply watching these kinds of efforts happen from the sidelines. Many evangelicals and Catholics took risks to support Biden publicly. President Biden and Democrats need to honor their courage."

Pro-Life Evangelicals for Biden includes pastors, community organizers, academics, seminary officials and leaders in Christian publishing. Richard Mouw, president emeritus of Fuller Seminary; John Huffman, board chairman emeritus of Christianity Today; Jerushah Duford, author and granddaughter of evangelist Billy Graham; and Joel Hunter, a faith community advisor and former pastor of Northland Church in Longwood, Florida, are among those who supported Biden. See a list of those who signed a statement of support for Biden’s election here.

Although the group said prior to the election, “We disagree with Vice President Biden and the Democratic platform on the issue of abortion,” it further said, “Joe Biden’s policies are more consistent with the biblically shaped ethic of life than those of Donald Trump.”

The group was also disappointed that the Biden administration has not engaged in dialogue with its members since the presidential campaign.
