US House radicals would leave babies to die after failed abortions

Abortion advocates in the U.S. House are stuck in a holding pattern. Like a plane that circles in airspace waiting for permission to land, radicals who opposed the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (HR 26) in debate on the floor last Wednesday still think the bill is about a woman’s right to choose.

Actually, the Born Alive Act has little to do with the woman or with abortion. The bill determines whether the infant — who somehow survived the trauma of nearly being killed in the abortion process — is provided with health care and, therefore, is given the opportunity to live or die. The mother is a separate human being from the surviving child, who is considered a “legal person” after leaving the womb. Such a view is contrary to the collective mentality of Democrat representatives who, united in lock step against the bill (save one who voted “present” and another who joined the Republican block supporting passage), saw the Born Alive Act as attacking the rights of women for “reproductive health care.”

Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, said the bill mandates the immediate transfer of the infant to a hospital. Rep. Nadler had a problem with that and opposed passage of HR 26.

“The problem with this bill is that it endangers some infants [born alive] by stating that that infant must immediately be brought to the hospital where, depending on the circumstances, that may be the right thing to do for the health and survival of that infant or it may not,” Nadler said. “That is the problem with this bill. It directs and mandates certain medical care which may not be appropriate, which may endanger the life in certain circumstances. That’s why we oppose this bill.”

In Rep. Nadler’s mind, the infant would be better off in the hands of the abortionist who just tried to kill the child! The woman's right to leave the clinic without her baby would not be infringed.

Minority Whip Rep. Katherine Clark (D-MA) mourned the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. She spoke out strongly on a “national abortion ban” as “anti-woman, anti-choice, anti-family and anti-freedom.” Rep. Clark and other Democrats, instead, offered the misnamed “Women’s Health Protection Act,” which would codify abortion, as a vote for “freedom” in America.

Other radicals in the House agreed with this approach even as they failed to bring the Born Alive Act to its demise with a 220-210 vote.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., called the Republican-sponsored bill requiring health measures be taken for babies born alive after a failed abortion an effort to impose "government-mandated pregnancy."

In a tweet following the vote, Kamala Harris held the party line.

"House Republicans passed an extreme bill today that will further jeopardize the right to reproductive health care in our country," Harris tweeted. "This is yet another attempt by Republican legislators to control women's bodies."

A concurrent resolution also succeeded Wednesday with a 222-209 vote. H.Con.Res. 3 condemns recent attacks on pro-life facilities, groups and churches, and calls on the Biden administration to use appropriate law enforcement in support.

The next steps for these pro-life measures are not yet clear. We need a pro-life champion in the Senate to take the baton. That champion may be Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), who, on January 5, became the new head of the Senate Pro-Life Caucus.

Beyond the recent pro-life activity in the House, the Walgreens and CVS on your corner will likely become chemical abortifacient providers with a recent change in regulation under the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. Women can now engage in what are euphemistically called “self-managed abortions.”

Clearly there is much to pray for and protest. God's will be done!
